My Amazing Oscar

This is a dedication of acheivement for my amazing son Oscar who despite his profound disabilities lives life to the full. I wanted to share the magical and inspiring attitude of my young man, who has shown no matter what any profession or person tells you that you probably won't be able to take part or be included in regular hobbies and daily activites that we all take for granted, you have to try it for yourself and make your own decision. The proof here is that so far Oscar has not found many that he truly could not take part in , in some way or another, for example riding the Pirates of the Carribean ride at Walt Disney World Orlando, alligator seeing in the everglades, taking up Judo, swimming with dolphins, riding the quad bike up the stables and being one of 14,231 pirates who reclaimed the Guniess World Record in 2012.

LAST OF THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS POOL FUN DAY

Fantastic day we all had a great time in the pool, this summer has seen Iden grow in confidence and swim without his arm bands, the pool is 1.4m deep and he can not touch the bottom, but now Iden is swimming the length of the pool in the centre with full confidence of his ability.

This is lovely for us that is two boys swimming and two more to teach, all in a great relaxed and fun environment, with the promise of pizza's and ice-cream for tea...

Here I am, I love the summer, especially this gorgeous weather we have had, all us kids have had a blast and been wonderfully noisy...

The next boy to learn to swim, Alfie is only 3yrs old but so confident and doing great.

Whoa steady up Alfie, such a confident swimmer.

Fantastic.

This is Ewan my best friend doing what us boys do best, having fun!

Ewan wrestling my dad with judo moves...

JUDO YOKO-SHIHO-GATAME AND ESCAPE FROM KUZURE KESA-GATAME

Here I am learning the feeling of being dragged by my obi across the mats forward and back zigging and zagging.  This is so I get used to being moved firmly and unexpectedly.

Here I am learning the feeling of being thrown sideways left and right.  This helps me prepare for judo moves like Escape from Kuzure Kesa-gatame and Osoto-otoshi.

Practising the feeling of my chest pushing down, then I turnover into Yoko-shiho-gatame and pulling both grips towards me while pushing uke over and down onto their back.  Once I have my uke there I apply my own hold down, Yoko-shiho-gatame.

HORSE SHOW AT CHIDDINGLY

Oscar went to support his best friend at his horse show, this is Ester the horse saying hello to Oscar.

Here Ester has been placed 4th in mountain and moorland in hand ridden, this is their first show together and wow well done girls.

Oscar's bestest friend Ewan on his new pony Ester at Chiddingly Horse Show, Ewan entered the handy pony class which was really cool, he had to ride Ester through flags and lines of bells, pick up small rings and place them on hooks, dismount and lead Ester through a horse trailer, mount up and then back up and grab a knights sword and strike three panels and finally pick up a flag and a Olympic torch and place them back in a small holder, he did fantastic.

OOOPPS !!! OSCAR TOLD HIS JUDO TEACHER HE WAS BORED !!!!!!!

YOKO-SHIHO-GATAME

Oscar told his Judo teacher that he was bored, Brave Boy! ! !   Well he was truly put through some more advanced judo moves by his instructor in this lesson.  Oscar worked really really hard and concentrated on remembering the techniques for this move as next week his lessons as requested by Oscar have been pepped up !!!

YOKO-SHIHO-GATAME 4th MON

This move that Oscar is practising is Escape from Yoko-shiho-gatame.  I am the Tori holding down my uke, to escape the uke will try to bridge and roll, I grab the back of my uke's jacket and had to push up with my legs and then try to grab the inside of their leg, then we keep rolling over, using our legs for power and my hands for controlling, my uke should end up on top of me holding me down.

1st stage I kneeled at my partner's side and placed one arm around their neck, my other arm gripped through the legs and onto the belt.

My uke, (daddy) is trying to escape by pushing his torso up like a bridge and rolling over using his legs for power, while controlling me with his hands.

Here uke has escaped from yoko-shiho-gatame and ended up on top of me holding me down.

HASTINGS PIRATES DAY 2013 WITH CAPTAIN OSCAR

Arrrghhh me maties, it be that time for Tortuga's Pirate gathering again, lots of scallywags and rum was a flow with many a sea shanty including one of my favourite, Chicken on a Raft.

6 Pirate parachute jumpers coming down over us Pirates and they had large pirate skull and crossbones flags hoisting the colours high.

Fabulous band playing all sea shanties and pirate songs very loud and they had had a lot of Pirate Rum so they said...

Once again a fabulous Pirates Day, I am still one of the 14,231 Pirates that hold the World Record for the most Pirates recorded in one gathering, since the 1800's.

PASSED MY 2nd MON JUDO GRADING

MY 2ND MON GRADING, THIS WAS THE HARDEST GRADING YET FOR ME AS MY INSTRUCTOR SAID SHE WAS GOING TO REALLY TEST ME ON MY THEORY AND MY PRACTICAL MOVES AND GOING TO ASK ME FAKE QUESTIONS TO SEE IF I REALLY KNOW MY 2nd MON STUFF!

Here I am starting to show one of my favourite moves mune-gatame where I am going to place my chest over my partners and then clamp them to me by gripping them under their neck and arm.

Here my instructor is asking me some theory questions for my grading, I had to know the English translation for:
Osae-komi = Holding
Toketa = Hold broken

Here my instructor asked me who is the founder of modern day judo?

As I communicate with a strong single or quick double blink for a YES and a strong long stare for a NO, my instructor tested me with this question she asked:

is the answer BRUCE LEE, I said NO
is the answer DADDY, I hesitated for a moment, thought about it and said NO
is the answer JIGORO KANO, I said YES YES YES

Here I am being asked about the judo code and my instructor slipped in a few wrong answers here too, but I know my judo code and said NO to the incorrect questions!  The code is:

COURTESY
COURAGE
FAIRPLAY
HONOUR
MODESTY
RESPECT
SELF-CONTROL
FRIENDSHIP
HYGIENE

My instructor has been working really hard with me in learning how I communicate so that she could grade me thoroughly and with no compromise and without the help of any translation from anyone else, this is because she is so tough and passionate about the sport that if you work hard and learn well you deserve to pass if not you will not...

NATIONAL TRUST NYHAMS GARDENS

Fantastic day out at Nyhams Gardens in Sussex, this is the ruin of the original house that still stands, I had a lovely walk around the grounds, round the old pond and through the Laural pathways, then a wonderful picnic and ice cream to finish off.

Amazing huge tree...

The famous wisteria walkway, this was still just in bloom on the sides and the trunks of the wisteria are amazing as they are so old.

Magnificent ruins, I can imagine how stupendous this house was before the fire.

I just love folly's like this one, they are real bursts of peoples personality's and it is a real pleasure to walk round and enjoy their passion.

These are fig trees that grow over the back wall of the car park, and we wanted to look at how they are trained so that we can maybe add this feature to my Mediterranean garden wall at home.

Fountain in the flower garden.

FALMOUTH SHOUT SEA SHANTY FESTIVAL

FALMOUTH SEA SHANTY SHOUT

This is such a great 3 day venue, where 40 or so sea shanty groups come and sing, they go from pub to pub and sing their shanties, also there is a stage now in event square for the groups to sing from.

I meet Gully and all the guys from Fisherman's Friends there some several years ago and then again in his home village of port Issac, where I was very lucky because he and the group, who were only in their local pub said they would sing "In South Australia I was Born" for me and then they sung a few more shanties for the rest of the customers, this was my best day.

Gully said he would sing for me when ever I saw him, and I believe him!  I made up some fun wanted posters of myself and mum and dad went and pasted them up around Cornwall for a bit of fun and Gully signed mine for me.
